International Day of Charity

“If we live in a world where everyone only cares about themselves, then it would be a cruel and selfish world. That is not the world that I want to live in.” Timothy Lam.

We all have heard about the charity at least once in our lives, right?

But exactly, what is a charity?

Let's see how we can explain it: actually, the answer is very simple, charity consists in helping those in need!! easy no?

A friend one day said to me: "I do charity" “ Congratulations" I said, but I wanted to understand how he did his charity. When I asked him how he told me that every day he gives a few coins to someone he meets on the street asking for a small contribution to survive the day.

I congratulated him because every day he helps people and it's a very beautiful and important thing but donating money is not the only way to do charity. We can do charity in various ways and we have to know how to do it in the right way The first thing that comes to mind is to donate money that can be done in various forms, ok perfect excellent way of doing charity but what else?

Understanding what is needed

First of all, it is important to understand what the actual need is: An act of charity can also be aimed at a country in difficulty because of the economic situation, lack of resources or natural disasters. For example, at the moment, our country Bolivia, together with Brazil, is going through a very difficult time because of the fires that have hit the Amazon area. Helping does areas would be an act of charity. It is advisable to consult the organizations in the field to understand what is needed. In the acute phase of the emergency, useless or unsuitable products can generate management and storage costs and become a real problem complicating the logistics in the area affected by the disaster. So understanding the real need is the first thing to do. Once you understand this important point you can proceed with the actual help.

- You can do charity by going directly to the place to help people who are continuously striving to stop the current difficult situation.

- A very useful way to do charity can be to do volunteer work, dedicating our time to give a contribution so that the world in which we live is going to be better, whether it is a few steps from home or on the other side of the world no matter what kind of volunteer it can be social, environmental, or something else. Everything would be very important for humanity.

- Another form of charity can be to send food or clothes to people who need it more than us, maybe you have a jacket or a pair of shoes that you no longer use, well give them to someone who cannot afford it. It’s just a jacket but it is important !!!!

- Or simply buy something for sale from an organization that is committed to donating part, or all of the incomes to people who are going through a difficult time that in some cases can last a lifetime.

And so on … these are just some of the many ways in which you can do charity.

Charity is important as it allows us to reach out into wider society, and help those that are in need of our support.

September the 5th will be the International Day of Charity.

The date was chosen by the UN to remember the day in which the now Saint Teresa of Calcutta left us.

This important day was established with the objective of sensitizing and mobilizing people, NGOs, and stakeholders all around the world to help others through volunteer and philanthropic activities. The date was chosen by the UN to remember the day in which a great person left us. Thanks to this person nowadays we all have a great example of being committed to charity. She was a little Albanian nun who has decided to dedicate her life to others, we are talking about the great Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

A woman who has spent more than 40 years of her life caring for the people in need in the Indian city of Calcutta. Arrived in India in 1929, after almost twenty years as a teacher, she decided to take off her traditional nun's clothes and form a new congregation with the sole purpose of helping people that really needed help. In 1950, Mother Teresa founded the Congregation of the Missionaries of Charity, whose mission was to take care of the "poorest of the poor" and "all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for by society, all those people who have become a burden on society and who have fled from all. In 1979 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize "for his work in the struggle to overcome poverty and misery, which are also a threat to peace".

By 2013, the charitable organization she had set up, the Missionaries of Charity, had spread to 700 missions in 130 countries, providing soup kitchens, centers for family assistance, orphanages, schools, hospitals and homes for people with diseases such as leprosy, AIDS and tuberculosis. The 4th of September 2016, Mother Teresa was canonized by the Roman Catholic Church as Saint Teresa “ We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop” Saint Teresa

How is the International Day of Charity celebrated?

The United Nations on this day invites all of the member states, various organizations and businesses and all of us citizens to celebrate the day by contributing to charity efforts in any way we can. The UN encourages charity donations, driving education and awareness-raising activities in order to push the importance of charity. beyondBeanie is very committed and involved in the theme of charity, as you know we work with women who live in difficult situations in remote areas of the Bolivian countryside and our idea is to provide them with a job they can do from home to be able to raise their children and give them the love and attention necessary to ensure a childhood worthy of being remembered with a permanent smile.

As mentioned earlier, one of the ways to do charity could be to buy something from an organization committed to selling products to help people in need. We advise you to take a look at our online shop and who knows, maybe you find something you like. Our products are handmade by our craftswomen and if you buy it, you will help someone and it will be a good World Charity Day for you too.

Giving or volunteering also brings benefits to those who devote themselves to this altruistic activity: this is what the University of California says, according to which charity increases the happiness of those who donate.

It is a physical issue, linked to the increased release of hormones such as endorphins. In addition, charitable activities also benefit health: according to various studies, in fact, donors reduce the percentage of risk due to diseases and derive various benefits in the event of chronic diseases.

Among other things, the benefits of kindness also become an excellent relief valve for stress and a mine of oxytocin: a hormone that helps us to socialize with others, increasing empathy.

All the beyondBeanie staff wishes you a happy INTERNATIONAL DAY OF CHARITY.
